  • The first thing you'll notice about "You, at the End," the first single off Lafawndah's forthcoming LP The Fifth Season, is what's missing. Gone is the bleeding-edge production that defined her 2019 full-length, Ancestor Boy, as well as the discernible R&B influences that have informed her approach in the past. This time, Yasmine Dubois goes for an organic, nearly acoustic approach, her voice soaring over horns from Theon and Nathaniel Cross. The lyrics come from a Kate Tempest poem about a misfit harnessing immense, world-shattering powers. Musically, the track draws on a tradition of mystic minimalism that includes her former collaborator Midori Takada, as well as larger-than-life figures like Björk and Scott Walker, artists who deliver emotional gut-punches via deceptively small gestures.
