Ratsnake - You did it

  • The new EP under Gesloten Cirkel's alias is an unpredictable delight.

  • We know very little about Gesloten Cirkel and even less about his alias Ratsnake, which has resurfaced for the first time since 2014. While mystery shrouds his identity, his work is known and loved by his followers, who are taken by his granular electro-influenced techno. The highlight of this EP is "deejays," which is driven by two tinkering acid patterns that travel like a ping-pong ball across a wooden table. Gesloten Cirkel appears to excel at making this style of rough, on-the-fly decisions in his music. "that One time," for example, doesn't bother with a standard intro. The techno cut wastes no time, abruptly assaulting listeners with pounding bass from its onset. Things take a more chilled-out turn with "it's Berlin," a punk-leaning track that sounds like something that could have emerged from Jasmine Infiniti's oeuvre. A chorus of slow claps welcome you to the record's closer, "four claps - You did it!" Maybe this is a self-deprecating note, or a cheeky stab at our diminishing attention spans. Either way, matching up to his excellent catalogue, Gesloten Cirkel's first Ratsnake project in six years could hardly come close to a chore.
