  • Asma Maroof, AKA Asmara, has added several strings to her bow these past few years, making beats and mixtapes with Kelela, scoring short films and composing for one of Switzerland's top theatres. The only snag is there hasn't been much time for her own music, which is a shame because it absolutely slams. The two tracks on DEVIANT EYES, her first solo release since 2017, combine a wealth of sounds and samples into two vibrant, rhythmic gems. With so much going on, the real magic is in the arrangements, which fizz and throb without feeling cluttered. The title cut is tough and rude, all dramatic strings and razor-sharp percussion. "DARLING EYES" is smoother, with the vocals from Faith Evans' R&B smash "Love Like This" chopped, pitched up and sprinkled over a graceful beat. The EP, in Maroof's own words, shows "TWO SIDES OF MY CRAZY."
