  • Ryan Elliott has, relatively speaking, gone mad on the release front these past 12 months. After going six years without putting out a record, he's now dropped three in quick succession, two of them on Faith Beat, his new label. Elliott is, of course, known mainly as a resident DJ at Berghain and Panorama Bar, but he's tended to have these periodic bursts of activity in the studio, turning out tracks that speak to his style of playing, an ongoing oscillation between house and techno. With "a focus on meticulously crafted club tools," Faith Beat won't be straying from this philosophy any time soon, something the rock-solid The Move EP confirms. I was a big fan of "Get To You," the bouncing B2 from The Introduction, the first Faith Beat EP. Similar vocal stabs show up in "The Move," this record's opener. The bassline is the key element, though—when we all finally return to nightclubs, DJs could try mixing "The Move" in quickly (or using a loop) to build tension for the low-end reveal just after the one-minute mark. There's also a tidy bassline on "Headspace," a more house-orientated number with shades of Larry Heard, a producer who might also come to mind with "4JM7," its spindly synthesizer reminiscent of the Mr. Fingers material from a few years back. That just leaves the rather banging—and pretty surprising—"Fermi II." Usually Elliott would be content with just the effective groove he crafts through drums and a synth, but a further synth line completely overwhelms the arrangement, crescendoing with a screech. He's not typically a producer who aims for big moments, but that's definitely what this is.
