  • Fresh electro and drum & bass from a star of Knoxville's growing scene.

  • Less than two years into releasing records, Knoxville's Nikki Nair has put out disco and house on Discovery, leftfield UK styles on Gobstopper and booming broken techno on Scuffed. Now he lands on Barely Legal's Pretty Weird label with an EP that shows off another two styles: electro and drum & bass. The electro cut ("The Analyst") is rock-solid, with a catchy vocal chop and writhing frequencies that recall old Jimmy Edgar. "Scuzzy," the drum & bass track, is the pick here, though. It's like a love letter to the genre by someone who's not invested in the ins and outs: the occasional flash of breaks, nasty basslines and a jumpy disposition, sprinkled with supple tabla percussion on the far ends of the stereo spectrum. It's another example of the anything-goes approach that makes Nikki Nair one of the stars of Tennessee's growing scene.
