  • Few rushes in music collecting compare to finding a compilation of totally new artists, all delivering first-rate contributions. This is exactly what we get on Transformations, the latest EP on Darwin's SPE:C label. Marking both the start of a new decade and five years of releases, these tracks build on the foundations of different genres of chest-rattling, bass-heavy music. The results are five varied and undeniably effective DJ weapons. A weighty, psychedelic dubstep number from main(void) opens the record, fittingly titled "Microdot." Its huge bassline will likely be the main draw, but it's main(void)'s deft percussive flourishes that really bring it home. Delo offers up a hefty piece of 130 BPM jungle, complete with massive breakbeats and dubbed-out patios. "Muter," by Premise, is drum & bass with a footwork-inspired pulse. The four-on-the-floor pulse of Alex R's "z50" separates it from the other tracks, though it, too, is littered with breakbeats. The EP closes with "Slalom" by An Avrin, its slinky, descending melody and broken rhythm ending this brilliantly fun release on a high note.
