  • Nepal, unlike other South Asian countries, is often overlooked when it comes to independent music. Though it's much smaller than its neighbors (except Bhutan), and has recently been ravaged by earthquakes, the home of Mount Everest remains a quiet and consistent bastion of rugged, off-kilter beats. Nepalese electronic music is thick with metal-on-metal grooves, skippy basslines and rhythms that seem to slow time. Venues like Galaxy Discoteque helped shape the electronic culture. Among Nepal's latest crop of producers is Prasidha Yonzon, a producer who's been making music as YNZN.P for just over five years. He grew up in Patan, south of Kathmandu, and his work picks up where scene legends like Ankytrixx and Ranzen Jha left off. Yonzon's debut EP, How About That, is a mix of chopped sounds, samples and percussion. One highlight is "Dirty Swing Thing," which is undercut by an ethereal drone. It's melodic but stays grounded thanks to drums that cushion your ears. The title track is more straightforward, with samples that evoke a sense of calm. The EP is concise but filled with fresh ideas. Hopefully it inspires other Nepalese producers.
