  • SoundCloud producers are the butt of many jokes, but is that deserved? Many artists stepping into the mainstream today can partly thank SoundCloud and its vibrant ecosystem of underground artists. Among the standout producers making use of this platform is the anonymous club maverick GRRL. The North Carolina-based artist is dubbed a "SoundCloud curator-turned-DJ" in their NTS show bio, where they explore the edges of the "internet-born club sound." While their tracks have long been staples in club mixes, the latest Ape Dub EP takes a dive into the hardcore continuum. "Ape Dub" opens with muted jungle breakbeats, slowly building up to the viscous synths and whopping bass that remain throughout. The dubstep-like "The Bird" doesn't contain the variety and build that propels the first track—it feels too brief. But the repetitive buzzsaw synth, ridiculous sub-bass and simple vocal shouts would make it perfect for a revelatory club moment.
