Blixaboy - Databreak

  • Electro, Dallas-style.

  • Wanz Dover is a staple not only of the Dallas electro scene, but the Metroplex's music community as a whole. He's played in countless bands, organized a space rock festival and written for local papers and magazines for years. But it's as Blixaboy that he explores his love of electro, which originally sprouted from a trip to Detroit and an obsession with Drexciya. On Databreak, he uses electro as a blueprint for something a little more out-there. There's plenty of on-the-nose, sci-fi-tinged electro here. "Digitalspy 6HG" and "Databreak 2XZ" are dead-ringers for '90s Detroit, with the scuffed textures and dilapidated synths that feel like they could slip out of sync at any moment. But Dover's approach to electro is unusually live and dynamic. That comes across best on "Cyberdeck Operator 3YX," where trap-style hi-hats stutter around the melodies like a child gleefully colouring outside the lines. Even when Dover is mostly playing by the rules, like on the sleek "Night Thief 5KV," there's something vital about his approach to this sound, embodying the same vibrant energy that makes Dallas one of electro's most important hotspots to this day.
