K-LONE - DRB08

  • The silky side of UKG.

  • Until now, K-LONE, the Bristol producer and self-described "co-bossman Wisdom Teeth," has never shown a hint of nostalgia. His records are strikingly modern, from the odd half-step of BB-8 / Barbarossa to dub experiments like "Old Fashioned." His new one for Dr Banana is another step in what Angus Finlayon called his "ever-expanding sound," but not in the direction you might expect: it's classic UKG, artfully reduced and just the right side of throwback. Once you get past "MC," a bright and bouncy garage cut with a GZA sample for a hook, DRB08 is pure afterhours, all warm pianos and silky drums. "Close" and "Cruisin'" are romantic, gently bumping 2-step. I personally could do without the familiar vocal samples on "U," but this one, too, nails a certain low-lit vibe. Coming from such a cutting-edge artist, DRB08 feels like a lark, but an undeniably fun one.
