  • DJ Plead's main influences include Pearson Sound, The Neptunes and the Syrian disco singer Saria al-Sawwas, which should give you an idea about his sound. The Melbourne artist produced some of our favourite tracks of 2019, including "Salt And Pepper," an energetic drum workout with flecks of Arab instrumentation. Now, he's back with three similarly excellent edits. This time, the tracks are raising money for a cause—all proceeds will go towards helping those impacted by fires in southeastern Australia. Massari For Relief ("Money For Relief" in Levantine Arabic) also happens to feature some of the best tunes Plead has released. Best of all is "Mercy," a rare case of Plead using vocals. There are shades of Clams Casino in the way the looped, heavily filtered voice is buried in the mix, which means they're about feeling, not hearing. As usual with Plead, syncopated percussion goes haywire underneath, as synth zaps and what sounds like a mijwiz pipe fill out the spaces. Blending the modern and the traditional rarely sounded so touching.
