  • Daughter Produkt is one of Gerald Donald's more shadowy projects, emerging on MySpace in 2007 as a collaboration with Annie Hall before reappearing for a track on a Tresor compilation in 2017. It now seems like a full-fledged project, judging from the ten tracks that have been uploaded to Bandcamp in the last month and a half. It's also unusually collaborative: the page lists Sarah Davachi, Richard Smith and Christina Vantzou, among others, as part of the project, though each track is uncredited. "Binary State Zero," the most recent track, features Vantzou and Rubin Spiel (according to Spiel himself). It's one of the strangest tracks to emerge from the Dopplereffekt universe in some time. If you flit through the Daughter Produkt Bandcamp, you'll find tracks at various speeds—though most are slower—with the familiar Donald touches (icy chords, sputtering arpeggios). "Binary State Zero," however, adds strings to the mix. It's striking to hear something so natural and warm in this music. Ambient and unsettling, "Binary State Zero" isn't quite a banger, but it adds a new kind of texture. From its revolving-door personnel approach to the unusual sounds on "Binary State Zero," Daughter Produkt has the potential to be the most exciting thing that Donald has done in years. As the Drexciya reissue machine thunders on, it's heartening to hear him still forging forward with new ideas. Keep your eyes on that Bandcamp page.
