- Sometimes cute, sometimes unnerving experimental club from Hangzhou.
- Yikii is a Chinese artist whose work sounds like chamber pop viewed through the lens of modern K-pop and club music. Saccharine vocals weave their way among cute piano and synth arrangements, plus off-the-wall kick drums and chaotic basslines. Her work with the South African artist Dasychira has been some of her best, and her new EP, for the Hangzhou-based FunctionLab—notably located outside China's usual hotspots of Beijing and Shanghai—reunites the two for a delightfully wacky record.
The music explores delicate pop, sometimes with harrowing touches like the roaring bass in "Moonlit Neverland." Other times, it's just pretty. The two Dasychira remixes are the standouts, unknotting Yikii's art pop into more contoured shapes. Soft, catchy and almost unnervingly charming, Dasychira rounds off an EP that will draw you back again and again.
