  • Well look at this. Techno artists Donato Dozzy and Tommy Four Seven both turn their hands to drum & bass, remixing tracks from Homemade Weapons' Gravity album, and create one of the more eye-catching 12-inches in recent months. The story is made even juicier when you find out that both artists were apparently given no prior instructions and decided independently to explore drum & bass tempo. In both cases, though, this news isn't totally out of the blue. Dozzy has recently been playing the odd DJ set with drum & bass at its core, something that initially gained attention through his incredible closing performance at Terraforma 2017. Tommy, meanwhile, played drum & bass before he broke through as a techno DJ, and as recently as last month he invited Homemade Weapons and Pessimist to remix tracks from his recent album, Veer. Gravity Remixed shows that they both should have tried this sooner. Tommy's brand of drum & bass is, unsurprisingly, fricking hard. In truth, his version of "Red Tide"—originally a techy, jungly cut—isn't a million miles from the broken techno sound him and his label, 47, push. The remix has a jagged, lurching feel, the pulverising beats and distortion creating a mood both headbanging and skanking. It's Dozzy's more subtle version of "Svalsat" that steals the show, though. I'll admit that I didn't find it all that remarkable at first—but the stuttering groove has a python-like effect, its rhythm constricting you more and more tightly until the tension is borderline intolerable. Dozzy weaves in a synth a little like the iconic line at the start of Orbital's "Belfast," only this time the bliss has turned sour. The late arrival of the original's anxious strings only seals the deal on this incredible remix.
