- The Manchester artist Avernian calls his music "mutant UK gqom," which is about as accurate a descriptor as I'd be able to come up with. "Odiham (Terror Mix)," from the UK label Scuffed Recordings' latest four-track compilation, has the thrust of the South African gqom sound, but there's a technoid clang. Imagine Batu's broken techno shot through the lens of Roska or Crazy Cousinz, plus some unsettling shrieking. It's addictive and confident, combining bits and pieces from established styles into a track that could slot into DJ sets from Bristol to Durban.
