ABBA - Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Gram After Midnight Eck Edit 2.0)

  • A smart edit? Or the dumbest dance record of the year?

  • "I am so glad this got recommend [sic] to me," said a YouTube user named Sinex X, a comment liked by 62 other people in the past five days. Therein lies the reason we're talking about this track. About a month ago, a producer named Eckk, who's spent the last few years uploading sample-heavy house music to SoundCloud, started a YouTube channel for disco edits. He posted a version of Chanson's 1978-released soul song "Don't Hold Back" and a remix/edit of ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)." At a certain point, YouTube's recommendation algorithm picked up the track and—boom! It has almost 200k plays at the time of writing. (The Chanson edit currently sits on around 2.5k.) So did the bot pick a winner? It's hard to tell if this is the dumbest dance record of the year, a massively shrewd edit of a pop classic, or perhaps some of both. The beats and bassline Eckk adds are nice and robust. And if I heard this on a boat in Croatia I wouldn't stop dancing...Or would I? Maybe this is a timely reminder to not take this whole dance music thing so seriously? I'm not sure. This whole thing is confusing.
