  • Mars89's music transcends time and place. He's a Japanese producer who blends dancehall, gqom, ballroom and old-school jungle into a dense, funky pummel that sounds like no one else. A record from him is an auspicious way to kick off the NTS DJ Amy Becker's new label, and he lives up to the eclecticism of her show, Acrylic On Air. "TX-55" is reminiscent of his breakout EP of last year, End Of The Death, with its gargantuan, gqom-influenced thrust. The B-side, "Successor Project," introduces some new ideas. There's an uncharacteristically stiff kick drum, which adds a different dimension to Mars89's usually swung approach. It canes a ragga sample (from Code 071's proto-jungle "A London Sumtin'") until the voice becomes delirious, but the best part comes when Mars89 lets the breaks fly in the second half. Add in the low, brassy synths and you have something unique: a hardcore techno track that moves like jungle.
