  • Looking back, it's hard to imagine how colossal "Higher Ground" sounded in 2012. Hudson Mohawke and Lunice was a collaboration of heroic proportions, and this was the apex of the then-boiling over trap sound. The duo quit while they were ahead, shelving the project shortly after the TNGHT EP came out. Seven years on, they're back with "Serpent," a new single that presses the same buttons. Their tricks are no longer new, but the duo's distinct sound—cascading tuned percussion, yelped vocal stabs, lots of space for the sub-bass to breathe—remains infectious and silly, with a powerful rhythm engineered by two producers who know how to make every sound count. They're not defining a genre anymore; "Serpent" is almost nostalgic in its familiarity. Anyone looking to hear more from those halcyon days in 2012 will find a lot to like.
