- Grant "Daddy G" Marshall is known for creating a big part of the "Bristol Sound" and being Co - founder of the Wild Bunch Sound System, of which later Massive Attack was born. Being one of the youngest Bristol DJ's back in the 80's he soon made a name for himself with his eclectic laid back sound, ranging from hip hop, reggae, disco and dub. The "Bristol Sound" sound soon came to be synomanous with acts such as Tricky, Portishead and other pioneers of cool. Known for his work with Massive Attack his talents also lies with his DJ skills landing him a release on the revered DJ Kicks adding another anticipated instalment. Digging deep into his record collection, Daddy G lays out 17 tracks of cool, taking the tunes back to the 90's when trip hop was rife and including many tracks from his original outfit Massive Attack.
DJ Kicks was launched in "95" releasing mixes and DJ sets from industry stand outs, providing a platform for a variety of styles and genres. Incorporating the likes of Carl Craig, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Nightmares On Wax and Stereo MC's, whom all appreciate the level of freedom of being able to release their music under such an independent label as K7.
After the intro the mix Kicks off with Willie Williams - Armagideon Time followed up by Sound dimensions - Rockfort Rock both tracks hailing from the Reggae, Ska, Studio One label, obviously one of his earlier main influences. Studio One is the leading label in Jamaican music industry. Its owner and founder Clement "Seymour" Dodd started producing music in late 50's and 60's paving the way for the foundation of modern reggae music. Ska, rocksteady, reggae all these types of music were literally created on the Studio One premises. Daddy G has also included remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the famous Pakastani, Qawwali musician who has worked with the likes of Eddie Veder (Pearl Jam) and Peter Gabriel, His haunting chants had made him a much sort after artist for compilations until his death in "97".
Les Negresses Vertes a French band that are a kind of mix of punk, folk, and Latin tunes are to themself unique, qualifying for a slot on the CD. Massive Attacks Karmacoma is a lengthy rare mix of the radio version, well known around the globe. Ending with Paul Oakenfold's perfecto mix of another of Massive Attacks popular tracks Unfinished Sympathy a wonderful final track to any CD with its uplifting feel making way for a well executed album and another Stella addition to the DJ Kicks series.
The latest in the series brings back the feeling of when trip hop was at its peak, with lush sounds coming out of every corner of the globe, with slow down-tempo beats and jazz tips. Capturing the feel and the very essence of this genre, Daddy G has done himself and the DJ Kicks series justice.
