Nkisi - Destruction Of Power

  • High-energy rhythms and sonic chaos.

  • Following January's supple 7 Directions album, Nkisi returns with a more rugged release. The London-based artist has constructed a warzone of ominous synths, windswept atmospherics and drums that pummel like artillery. Kicks are distorted and deep, cascading into one another, while a ghostly William Basinski-esque synth melody surveys the damage underneath. At nearly 17 minutes, the composition feels epic in scope—subtly mutating over its duration—but its smudgy textures and careering percussion give it an earthy, urgent mood. The live version, recorded at Café Oto in March, is even more bludgeoning. During the first half, the mantra "destruction of power" repeats until Nkisi cranks up the pressure with intensified rhythmic patterns. She then layers rifling metallic clangs over cascading drums to the point of noisy, obliterating ecstasy.
