Dub Phizix - White Flag / Dragnet

  • Precision drum & bass that you could also spin in your techno set.

  • George Ovens's music slaps. His label, SenkaSonic, has become an outlet for his best tracks. Its latest EP is particularly good introduction to Ovens's style, thanks to "Dragnet." Instead of lassoing stiff drum sounds into neat paths, Ovens carves his drums up into lithe shapes and lets them spray across the track—like Paradox-style drumfunk. Each bar is marked by a James Brown grunt, the track obsessively clean and perfect until Ovens unleashes a rougher, louder breakbeat towards the end. It's sharp and clean enough that you could play it in a techno set, with a climax that truly feels earned. This is a track with crossover potential, but it's also pure drum & bass from one of the genre's most gifted producers.
