  • Classical-electronic hybrids are having a renaissance, with artists like Mica Levi, Oliver Coates, Maxwell Sterling and Kara-Lis Coverdale leading the way. Jade Statues is a lesser known but impressive example of this trend. This collaboration with the cellist Audréanne Filion is out through the Vancouver collective s.M.i.L.e., which was cofounded by the Ascetic House artist Baby Blue. Jade Statues brought Filion into the project after meeting her over a game of billiards. "Mochi" was the first track they made together, the classically trained Filion playing her deep spiccato strokes to some of Jade's existing loops. "Jester" was made the other way round, with Jade's breathless choral patches and rising pads supporting and mirroring the Jade's confident melody. These are beautiful, remarkably cohesive tracks.
