- A little-known Berlin artist launches Marcel Dettmann's new label with four gritty techno and electro tracks.
- Does Marcel Dettmann ever get bored of techno? He must do, right? And the same must be true of most DJs who, for many years, have been closely linked with a sound. His new label, BAD MANNERS, will host different artists that Dettmann has met throughout his career and bypass "genre limitations and techno cliches." Genre limitations, techno cliches, a clear focus on the music—this sounds like the language of someone who quite fancies dissolving a few boundaries around what he does, whether they were self-created or erected by fans, the press and promoters.
The task of freshening things up falls to Exterminador, a little-known Berlin artist, real name Mario Resta, who has a couple of extremely solid electro EPs to his name. BAD MANNERS 2 (a confusing title for a label's first release) leads with a super effective electro cut, "Bleeding From Inside," but then swerves into techno and a club sound closer to EBM. Nothing hits quite as hard as "Bleeding From Inside," but Resta shows plenty of grit and spirit. "Pericos," a techno track, crackles with a warped energy but is slightly let down by a harsh hi-hat that sits too high in the mix. "Scattered Remains" is the pick of the two '80s-influenced cuts thanks to its deranged assembly of synths, drum machines and speech samples. Resta's salty style here feels like the middle finger BAD MANNERS needed to get things moving.
