Derrick Carter & Mark Farina - Live At OM

  • It’s a rare occasion when I purchase an album that excites and moves me like Derrick Carter & Mark Farina’s double-disc ~ Live At OM. If I was forced to describe this album in 3 words I could easily say – “Funky As Hell.” As expected both mixes are extremely well done considering the live nature of this double set which was recorded live on Valentines Day at an OM session. The cheers of the audience and voracious mixing styles of each jock almost make you feel as if you’re in the room grinding with everyone else in attendance. From the downbeat of CD1 I couldn’t find it in myself to do what I normally do and quickly scan all of the tracks to see what I was in store for. From the get-go I was engaged in nothing short of a spiritual experience and the funky rhythms of Jason Hodges re-work of Jacob London’s “No Farting in The Ice Fort” The crowd goes wild for tunes such as Jason Hodges “F*ck Hodges” and Lavish Habits’ “Dance Wit U” as farina pulls out some tunes which seem to be from the 22nd Century. It’s very refreshing hearing one of the leading tastemakers in dance music pushing the boundaries once again in such a tasteful way. On CD2 Derrick Carter blends a perfect balance of tech and funk meshing together which should require a label on the CD case warning the listener of chronic neck pains. Only a DJ like Carter can convey their soul through a pair of turntables generating a perpetual wave of bodies across the dance floor. The track selection on Derrick’s side is nothing short of outstanding bringing in artists such as Stacy Kidd, Daft Punk, and the Freaks. Derrick manages to mesh each tune together as if each album was produced by the same person while also sampling many styles and genres at the same time. In summary I recommend this album as an essential for anyone inspired by the sound of house, jazz, techno or funk. It’s not often that I allow myself to exuberantly endorse an album but I find it very easy to tell everyone about OM’s latest.
