  • Visionquest's output has moved with the times. Where its original hallmark sound was a slow, sultry take on deep and tech house, A&Ring has kept the label's ear to the underground. Its latest record is a hot-right-now style of cute, jacking minimal house from the Greek producers Bodj & Roksi. Weird Science stirs up a polite, sunny-morning vibe with a familiar palate of shimmering pads, classic deep house bass tones and drum patterns. While "Otis AX" and "Flowtec" have driving, interesting rhythms and energetic dispositions, the title track achieves a stripped-back funkiness that sets it apart. On "Weird Science," Bodj and Roksi trust its unassuming elements, along with the here-and-there effects, to fill out the track. On the others, big pads or chords appear more often and draw attention away from their nice grooves. These are dependable tracks with a distinct and friendly attitude, and they're certainly a classy, even savvy, addition to Visionquest's catalog. The thing is, because this blend of minimal and deep house is a crowded field right now, they could use more personal flair.
