No Moon - Where Do We Go From Here?

  • Dreamy electro with shades of the past.

  • "Ugh, how did I not know about this?" is how I responded to discovering Craigie Knowes. The Glasgow label, which is also a party and DJ duo, has a catalogue teeming with quality house, techno and electro that respects the past but isn't necessarily beholden to it. Along with artists like DJ Overdose, Carl Finlow and Jensen Interceptor (don't sleep on this recent one of his, like I did), No Moon represents the electro wing of the label. The Manchester artist, who himself has been building a strong catalogue these past few years, put out an EP called Infinite Dreamz through Craigie Knowes last year, and now returns with three more pretty-yet-powerful jams. No Moon seems to be pulling on a few different musical threads. The atmospheres are rich and humid in a manner that recalls Balearic, ambient techno and "Pacific State." The force of the beats and basslines falls in the electro tradition. The use of classic breaks, meanwhile, nods to the hardcore continuum. It's debatable whether No Moon has anything new to say about these tropes, but you could find these tracks too lovely to care. Thanks to its wormy electro bassline, "Breakpoints" feels like the record's highlight, but others might be drawn to the rainforest atmosphere on "aoe_advancing" or the gurgling acid line that powers the title track.
