- Nina Kraviz unites with a ghetto house pioneer.
- As well as being one of the world's biggest DJs, Nina Kraviz is one of techno's most impressive diggers, known for playing, promoting and releasing obscure and underappreciated music. Look no further than the gabber and Russian IDM she's released through her labels. Dance Mania, the classic Chicago house outlet, is one of the many avenues Kraviz's digging has taken her down. A few years ago you could hardly go out without hearing a Dance Mania track, particularly DJ Deeon's "Freak Like Me" after it was re-released by Numbers. Kraviz is one of the reasons for that resurgent interest—she even recorded an all-Dance Mania mix in 2014. Feel My Butterfly is the result of a digging trip she took to Chicago, where she met with the Dance Mania crew. Among them was Parris Mitchell, whose mid-'90s releases helped define the label's ghetto house sound.
Their collaboration is not quite as exciting as it looks on paper. "Feel My Butterfly" is a very minimal, jacking hardware track in the classic ghetto house mould. Kraviz's most obvious contribution is her signature spoken vocals, which are looped and chopped up over gurgly acid. It will definitely do the trick on the dance floor, but isn't one that warrants many repeat listens, lacking the infectious bass or groove of Mitchell's best tracks. DJ Krime's mix features a groovier acid line and nice stripped-back beat. Sparing use of the vocals keeps things more interesting. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Kraviz playing Feel My Butterfly in a club, so it could have been kept as a secret dance floor weapon.
