  • Neil Landstrumm isn't the only veteran producer who enjoys the sounds of the '80s. Ron Trent, a pioneering house artist with a taste for all things deep, embraces that decade's distinctive aesthetic on Warm, his new EP for Future Vision Records. Best of all is "Night Ride," a synth-heavy track that pairs boogie-style synths—think Dâm-Funk, another '80s explorer—with a bubbling deep house groove. It's lean enough to let each element—piano, synth chords, bassline—get plenty of attention, the busy arrangement never slowing the forward momentum. That's not the case for "Exhale," where a stuttering drum pattern creates a topsy-turvy groove that a cheesy electric guitar, placed high in the mix, does its best to subdue. The EP's smoothest tune is "On A Journey," where a slo-mo chug moves underneath an atmospheric patchwork of synths that might transport you to some tropical island, where Ron Trent, wearing sunglasses, hands you a cocktail with a smile.
