- Fede Lijtmaer is one of the key figures in the scene surrounding Phonotheque, the tiny yet internationally famous club in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo. Its previously insulated group of resident DJs can now be found playing regularly at likeminded parties across Europe. Some, like Phonotheque's breakout star Z@p, have moved to Europe permanently.
Fede went the other way, moving back to Montevideo from Berlin five years ago. His role in the scene's growth has been important. El Milagro, the label he founded in 2013, is an outlet for a new generation of Uruguayan producers, hosting outstanding debuts from Luis Malon and Michelle, two of the scene's brightest talents. The music he produces is often easily distinguishable from that of the other Phonotheque regulars, marked by groovy basslines, jazz musicality and bouncing, swinging beats. In DJ sets and live performances, he allows a refreshing flippancy and wit to seep onto the dance floor.
"It Is Simple" is a perfect example. Its childish melody may divide opinion when listening at home, but it's a different experience in a club context. As the title implies, the track is indeed simple, yet too fun to be only functional. On the brilliant "Velocidad," energy levels plateau as acid melodies dance around a slithery bassline. "Reencuentros" is a funky, broken-beat inspired track for warming parties up, while "Don't Push The River" is for late nights, with bleeps and another catchy bassline. Daramar showcases Fede's distinctive style while highlighting his versatility.
