  • In 2017, the French, Berlin-based DJ and producer La Fraicheur, AKA Perrine Sauviat, was granted a residency at Underground Resistance's Submerge studios in Detroit. The residency inspired her first album, Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, last year, which drew some vile backlash on social media. "There wasn't a single day without a message or comment somewhere that was violent, talking about my appearance or my homosexuality, or my political views, or my music supposedly not being done by me, there was always something," she told me. "The only way I could get my boiling frustration out was to play with my synthesiser." Her rage can be felt on the resulting EP, Weltschmerz (German for a feeling of melancholy and world-weariness). It's her most brutal work to date, akin to her turbulent techno DJ sets. The track titles ("Quicksand," "AFOG," or "A Fucking Opportunity For Growth") conjure a losing battle. But the white-hot energy of the music, from the acid lashes of "Misanthropy" to the defiant stomp of "Weltschmerz," tell a different story.
