- Roger 23's first Ilian Tape record, Extended Play, was the Munich label's most abstract release. Deep and aquatic, that 2016 EP was a mix of ambient and broken techno tunes that were also among the strangest tracks ever released by Roger 23, a party-rocking DJ who also crafts club bangers. There's only one obvious club track on Is demanding for a CULTURAL NEGOTIATION, his second record for Dario and Marco Zenker's label. It's the jacking ten-minute techno tune on the B1, whose name is too long to type out (it's roughly equivalent to 15 words). The four-on-the-floor stomp is straightforward by Ilian Tape's standards, but what happens above is not. The chords are mangled, the top-end percussion is frantic and the mood is paranoid, which should appeal to DJs who like chaos with their grooves.
For an even more chaotic tool, reach for "Cultural Negotiation." The groove disintegrates several times over, the fizzing textures and stuttering sub-bass recalling Roger's 2012 bomb "Optical Tjeck." Just don't try and play the 2019 version when the club is packed, because you might clear the dance floor. Save it, and the rest of this out-there EP, for when you light up the first joint at the afterhours. Just don't overthink the track titles.
