  • Speaking to Bandcamp last year, Rudolf C (AKA Rudolf Dorr) talked about the healthy rivalry among his producer mates in Melbourne. "Someone will send this burner tune to a group chat, and I'll sit there and go, 'I can't let them get away with this, I gotta make a bigger tune now.'" Dorr's competitive streak might go some way in explaining the three excellent EPs he's put out since 2016. His fourth will likely net the attention they also deserved. Its title track is one of two Rudolf C productions that featured on DJ Seinfeld's DJ-Kicks mix last year. Deep Sea Survivor is a breaky, drum-driven affair with sub-aquatic siren synths and gauzy pads, at once restless and oddly calming. Pleasingly, as was the case on Dorr's prior EPs, the tracks here are as varied as they are accomplished. "Second Hand Love" is a dark party-rocker that lays ominous treated vocals over driving drums, wobbly bass and rippling acid lines. "Shmartie Pantz" goes deeper and weirder with bleeps, pitched vocals, a one-note squelchy loop and a general sense of discombobulation, enlivened by a jolting bassline mid-track. "Natural Cycle" returns to the hazy underwater textures that opened the EP with billowing synth pads, a seagull synth and crisp drums that keep the track moving. Together with his Salt Mines label cofounder and fellow talented Melbourne producer Shedbug, Dorr moved to Berlin last year. He's good enough to make a splash in a much bigger pond.
