- The Golden Filter's 2010 debut album, Voluspa, treated us to sensitive synth pop melancholia. Breezy synths, dramatic melodies and sharp production stood out among the lo-fi minimal wave tracks prevalent at the time. Its follow-up, Still // Alone, stripped down the duo's sound to skeletal EBM patterns. No longer relying on a song-based format, they moved to a straighter, more dance floor-oriented sound. Dislocation connects the two ends of The Golden Filter. Its lush atmospheres and electrified rhythms retain the band's poetic sound while infusing it with new energy.
This EP isn't strictly retro-focussed, but it subtly references synth music's heritage. We hear cold, Chris & Cosey-like melodies on "Talk Talk Talk," a stark tune about struggling to communicate. There's Detroit-style electro on "All The Way In" and ethereal 4AD-like tones on the darkwave banger "Cut My Hair." Yet these influences are smartly integrated into The Golden Filter's world, balancing intimacy with dance floor physicality. Dislocation's passionate narrative and cold delicacy make it a touching experience for body and mind. The music drifts like a train passing through a neon-lit metropolis, where there's space for dance and contemplation.
