  • nthng's sound takes in dub techno, hazy ambient and classic trance. His DJ sets hop effortlessly between these different strains, but his EPs tend to focus on one aspect at a time. He served up chunky yet emotional techno for Delsin on his most recent EP, while an earlier appearance for Transatlantic, The Traveller, saw him take on higher tempos and driving trance. His discography is both varied and cohesive. On Shine, he turns to the ambient fringes of techno. "Embryo" and "Lyla" combine light yet densely layered pads with deep, barely-there percussion. It's a path that's been fairly well trodden by ambient-inclined techno producers since Basic Channel, but there's no denying nthng's ability to make it work. There's something grandiose about the other two tunes. On the atmospheric, beatless title track, we get another version of the long trancey breakdowns so prominent in his dance floor material. "Atom" aims for emotional impact, with big church-organ chords and slow, epic drums.
