  • From tech house to trip-hop, the best UK electronic music can feel cinematic, even at its most minimal. That also goes for styles like dubstep and grime, where artists craft powerful soundscapes with fragments of sub-bass and a scattering of bleeps and bloops. Rikers / Daytona, the latest record from Commodo on Deep Medi Musik, is a fine example. The A-side, "Rikers," is a slinky four-minute tune that balances chopped, chime-style melodies with dubstep's half-time lurch, creating the same positive, introspective mood heard in, say, Proc Fiskal's colourful grime productions. It's a sound Commodo has nailed before, most recently on the dreamy title track from 2018's Dyrge EP. "Rikers" might be even better. "Daytona" is heavier but just as bright. There are keys, shakers and what sounds like a short vocal sample, all piercing the misty synth tones. The melodies are pronounced, as though they were played rather than chopped. Whichever side you put the needle on, this EP, like a touching movie scene, will leave you smiling.
