  • Jelly Bean Farm is an American label that specializes in the ever-so-British crossover between techno, dubstep, drum & bass and garage, where tempos and rhythms are free to roam. The label is a good match for the Leeds artist Krotone, whose off-kilter tracks would also suit, say, Keysound. With five limber drum workouts around 130 BPM, Bubbles is an encouraging record that explores new nooks and crannies in the hardcore continuum. Krotone best tracks are his most minimal. On "System Check," the kick drums fall in the peripheries of the rhythm, creating a stagger that could do wonders in the hands of a creative DJ. "Bubbles" is a Mumdance-style, "weightless" version of UK broken techno, while things get more assertive on "Club Scene." It's precise and polished, laden with dub techno chords that offer a sleeker take on his style. There's an especially pleasing moment towards the beginning of "Til 5," where the beat locks into a burly 2-step pattern. Then the track just kind of sits there, running its momentum into the ground.
