  • The most interesting house records are often hiding in plain sight. Producers like Pépé Bradock, Roman Flügel and Matthew Herbert are three of the style's most established names, yet they still churn out delightfully odd tracks loaded with character, often too weird for everyone except the most adventurous of DJs. Dave Aju, though lesser known than those artists, is another producer keeping it consistently weird. Off Weed Or Sane, his new EP for Herbert's Accidental Jnr label, offers four more oddball cuts to freak out afterhours and heady dance floors. More functional than Accidental Jnr's last few releases, Off Weed Or Sane gives DJs meatier grooves to work with. "O.O.O." is the most conventional of the lot, a zig-zagging house cut with a stomping bassline, simple drum pattern and rhythmic vocal. Its loud clap makes it the EP's only obvious peak-time option, as the other tracks are more abstract. Best of all is "Everybody's Watching," where a twisted bassline contorts underneath bleeps, chimes and a spoken vocal that combine for a tune begging to be played deep into some weekend-long session in Romania, sometime after the bar has run out of drinks and dancers have given up on their Monday plans.
