  • Not much happens in OCB's "Computer Default," but it still opens Casa Sports Vol. 2, 2018's final EP from the Moroccan label Casa Voyager, with a smash. A snaking peak-time jam with a growling bassline and zapping synths, it's the kind of muscular tune that locks a dance floor into its groove, a mean lurch that sounds like a midnight hardware session after a weekend without sleep. The main melody is a series of bleeps, which add colour to the droning low-end. It brings to mind a sunnier Stanislav Tolkachev, had the atonal techno master grown up smoking hash on Casablanca's beaches instead of block housing in industrial Eastern Ukraine. Casa Voyager has already found fans in key DJs connected to Berlin's Club Der Visionaere, but "Computer Default"'s housey groove should appeal beyond the close-knit neo-minimal scene. Running for only four minutes, it could have been twice as long. The rest of Casa Sports Vol. 2 is dedicated to more vintage sounds. Jamal Moula, who appears on the label for the first time, supplies "One Point Zero," a slamming electro jam that nods to boogie with its fat bassline. Kosh and Polyswitch, both Moroccan artists, handle the B-side. Kosh's "Casablanca Vice" is the EP's second standout track, a hazy house groover with hints of electro and a wriggling 303. Hinged around a subtle breakbeat, it builds on the twilit sound labels like Slow Life have explored for the past few years, and feels like a follow-up to OCB's similarly excellent "Aquaquest Pt. 2 (The Anticlimax)" on the previous Casa Voyager EP. A timeless blend of feeling and funk, these touching yet functional tracks are becoming this exciting label's specialty.
