- The Copenhagen fast techno set has found fans in Modeselektor, the duo behind the recently relaunched Seilscheibenpfeiler. It's no surprise the style appeals to the veteran Berlin pair, who, having been active since the '90s, have lived through almost every phase of techno, and seem to have a soft spot for its energetic early years. So far, Seilscheibenpfeiler has been a place for purist sounds with experimental or melodic flair. This was captured best on Kasper Marott's Keflavik EP, which paired Copenhagen's high speeds with hints of Italo disco. Solid Blake's Warp Room, the second Seilscheibenpfeiler EP supplied by an artist from the Copenhagen scene, is grittier.
Where Kasper Marott's EP focussed on sunny melodies, Solid Blake goes abstract with a blend of electro and techno delivered at speed. There isn't a simple four-on-the-floor beat to be heard, which feels like something the release could've used. Each track is heady, and would work best when a crowd is already locked into a set—unlike Keflavik, there's no floor-filler. Take "Tissue," a brooding electro tune with a halftime rhythm and sombre synth tones. The drums hit hard but the atmosphere is pensive, the kind of mood used to bring a dance floor's energy down. "Soap Cube" and "Warp Room" are more slamming. The latter is especially nice, its hyperactive bassline and zapping synths combining for a bomb that's easy to imagine hearing deep into a Marcel Dettmann set during some twisted Sunday afternoon at Berghain. The Copenhagen scene is proving to be one of dance music's more exciting hubs, something more EPs like Warp Room should solidify.
