- There's a branch of global bass music that spans the spectrum of experimental grime, hip-hop and dancehall. It includes labels like London's Night Slugs, New York's Mixpak Records, LA's Fade To Mind and Barcelona's Fractal Fantasy, and explores a hybrid club sound that pays respect to pioneers and innovators. The Irish producer Famous Eno is one of the producers exploring this sound. His new EP, Music For Clubs, features collaborations with some of the scenes key names, including UNIIQU3, Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones.
He invites Hawke and Jones to collaborate on "Life," the closing track. They add their signature mutant choir samples and breathless footwork syncopations to the mix, where the haunting production is brought together by the well-paired patois of London MCs Killa P and Trigganom. New Jersey's UNIIQU3 features on "Make It Clap," where an old-school hip-hop bounce, jolting sub-bass and clipped clap patches carry the minimal composition. Bay-C of the seminal Jamaican dancehall group T.O.K. contributes to the pop riddim of "Gal a Bubble," outlining the influence of Kingston dub and reggae on this corner of experimental music. Elsewhere, Bryte raps over "Money Collector," which takes notes from the West African Azonto scene he comes from. Famous Eno's rendition of the style adds icy synths and low resonances, two hallmarks of this international post-grime scene.
