  • Ooid is the first release from the Bristol producer Sunun, who's already built a reputation on live shows. Her brand of spooky, textured dub requires immense focus in a live setting—when she played at Farr Festival and London's Rye Wax, tangles of wires, microphones and harps were fed into mixers. This juggling of disparate sounds is palpable throughout Ooid's six tracks, as drums and vocals creep from the background amidst filters and buzzing frequencies. At its quieter moments, the EP's pacing and spoken-word bring to mind artists like Lucrecia Dalt and Felicia Atkinson. On "Untitled Lvlz," the rhythm plods against an omnipresent hum, with a murmured, stream-of-consciousness vocal layered in between. With its gently rippling melody, "Ishe Roots" is more lively, building to a woozy head with muted percussion before drifting to its end, like a fever dream. By the record's finish, the sinister fog of "Dark Just" turns into a craggy cacophony of feedback. Sunun's sound feels shaped by Bristol's dub scene, fitting nicely into the hazy, experimental world of Bokeh Versions. She's inspired by the constant presence of the drum in "revolution music," and the physiological way rhythms resonate in the body. On Ooid, the arrangements can feel lopsided or slightly off, even when they're not (like, say, lurching claps in "DRK BLNT"). The spontaneous mood of a live set comes through, and in these moments of bodily disorientation, Sunun seems to rewire the way we process what we're hearing.
