  • Fede Lijtmaer's Inside Out EP is the first release on the new label Varme, run by the Romanian DJ Paul Popa. It's Lijtmaer's third solo EP of what's been an impressive year. Where each of the Uruguayan producer's releases have taken a slightly different approach, Inside Out is all about the rhythmic experimentation, especially on "Programmed Improvisation," which avoids the perpetual rolling beat normally found in tech house. With offbeat chords and swinging hi-hats that seem to follow separate meters, the track swaggers and stumbles, threatening to trip over itself. A walking bassline supplies the groove, underpinning the madness in the higher frequencies. It's a sound Lijtmaer has teased before, heard in some productions and live sets, but it's never been so fully developed. The B-side has two variations on the same theme. "Awareness Of Death" turns away from the almost comically jazzy vibe of the A- side with a bassline that lurches rather than walks. "Wombling" is crafted with a lighter touch, stripping the initial idea back to its essentials. It rounds off an inventive and coherent EP.
