  • Dolphin or cat? It's easy to understand why the Berlin producer Marlon Hoffstadt named the third track on his Treat Yourself EP "Dolphin Cat" when you hear the repetitive synth that could have been inspired by either mammal. It's not as annoying as that sounds, though. Over a bassline, hi-hats and arpeggiating bleeps, the effect is energising and oddly compelling. The title track, with vocals from The 2 Bears' Raf Rundell, is more in line with the poppier fare Hoffstadt has favoured in the past. Its gummy bassline and kick belong in the club, but Rundell's plaintive croon, here recalling Damon Albarn, feels designed to appeal to a broader audience. "Jungle Highway" is a less memorable track built around an understated pulse, some minor key accents and a shuffling bassline echoing Tiga's "Pleasure From The Bass," while Bawrut's "Treat Yourself" remix is the one you'll want to hear in the club. It's loaded with bright synth stabs, a bolder bassline, bells, whistles and an acid freakout that begins mid-track. The "More Cowbell" remixer isn't one for subtlety, but he understands the difference between busy and OTT.
