Chaperone - Northeastern Meditations

  • Ambient techno that recalls post-industrial landscapes.

  • Venture into the post-industrial dilapidation of nearly any city in the north-eastern United States, and you're sure to encounter an emergent ecosystem, one where the rust-eaten factories and crumbling masonry of the previous century are being reclaimed by Mother Nature's encroaching meadows of plants and flowers. It's this very ecosystem that David Coccagna's honors with Northeastern Mediations, the Philadelphia producer's six-track EP for Enmossed, a resolutely DIY label from Maine that has quietly dropped some of the American underground's most entrancing forays into technoid murk, electronic-based composition and ambient noise. We're talking deep, cryptic records for heads who enjoy dissolving themselves in infinite washes of decay. The EP's more organic pieces, "Ashen Landscape Smoldering Love Letter," "Life Without Air-Condition" and "Beach," are earthy takes on ambient techno. All three are sticky and humid, their throb growing patiently yet relentlessly like weeds pushing through cracks of vacant lots. They're intensely decomposed, particularly the incantation-like "Life Without Air-Condition," where lo-fi clang and reverb are heard in the dubby ripples. It recalls the sound explorers who traversed the more zoned-out reaches of industrial in the late '70s and early '80s. "Wrecked Laughter" and "Homesick Scent Of Blood" counterbalance these tracks. Both are chilly and mechanical yet stained in haunted atmosphere, as though they're the forlorn ghosts of grinding machinery.
