- Two lean tracks from a godfather of Romanian minimal.
- It's hard to believe that Petre Inspirescu, one of the best minimal producers of all time, has only released around ten EPs. (It's harder still to accept that many of his best tunes will never be released, only heard when Inspirescu and a few of his fellow Romanians play gigs.) Most of these EPs explore the "classical house" style Inspirescu helped shape, where rhythm and melody come together to create a sound at once beautiful and mind-bending. Murgullll, Inspirescu's first club-ready EP since La Doi Pași for Amphia in 2014, finds the Romanian at his most abstract, presenting two razor-sharp minimal tunes with plenty of low-end. More functional than the melodic—and, for the most part, better—tracks Inspirescu saves for [a:rpia:r], Murgullll is a return to a familiar sound.
Both of Murgullll's tracks may have been produced years ago. That's especially true of "Murgull," where the percussion zaps and clicks like "Sad And Sand," one of the leaner moments on 2009's Intr-o Seara Organica…. The bassline rolls with a similar intensity, with ambient sounds that tumble around the stereo field, shifting every few bars. A melodic low-end makes "Cumva" more lighthearted, but there's no clap—this is only for the most open-minded dance floors. Murgullll is a solid EP that could have used more melody, which is the thing that attracted Inspirescu so much attention in the first place.
