  • The Brussels-based label Basic Moves strives to release "timeless" music. Along with labels such as Libertine, Seekers and HardWorkSoftDrink, it releases tracks from both past and present, but with a focus on Belgium's techno heritage. Its records have come from contemporary outsiders like Evan Baggs, up-and-coming producers like Walrus and DJ Booth, and Belgium's own heroes of the '90s, including Christophe "Deg" De Groote, who appears under the alias Circadian Rhythms. Deg's production credits reveal a man who seems to have been involved in everything techno-related in Belgium throughout the '90s, although his contribution and influence hasn't necessarily translated into international recognition. Basic Moves hopes to remedy that, presenting two previously unreleased tracks from 1996. They carry the hard, loopy sound of European techno from that time, but are crafted with a light touch. It makes them perfect for today's introspective dance floors. Both tracks are straightforward, building brooding atmospheres over tight, breaky loops. "Sinh Session" is the standout, with submerged synths and hypnotic subs. "There Is No Hope?" combines a spooky bassline with a barrage of 808 cowbells. This is music that justifies Deg's underground hero status and sounds great in the hands of the right DJ, late at night.
