  • The Moodymann-endorsed producer lays down a sunny blend of house and funk.

  • When Moodymann included Jitwam's drowsy "Keepyourbusinesstoyourself" on his 2016 DJ-Kicks mix, it was a powerful endorsement from an iconic artist known for an eclectic and idiosyncratic approach. Jitwam, a New York-based producer, DJ, songwriter and instrumentalist born in India and raised in Australia, shares Moodymann's penchant for stitching together soul, funk, hip-hop, pop—and his own manipulated vocals—to create dusty, soulful house tracks filled with character. Jitwam's new Purple EP for The Jazz Diaries finds him at his warmest and most accessible. "Desire," a joyous and sleazy funk song, begins the record with aplomb, and gets a broken-beat remix from Londoner K15 with a few guitar solos. "Stronger" has Jitwam looping the track's title around some uplifting house sounds for another positive, soulful anthem. "Flowwwww," a groggy collaboration with Tom Driessler, the bassist from the UK jazz group Yussef Kamaal, is six minutes of slow soul. On his most satisfying and cohesive record yet, Jitwam's busy and beautiful style is hard not to love.
