  • The word "visceral" tends to get overused by people describing abrasive club music outside the realms of house and techno. That said, the London producer Kamixlo's compositions affect your body more than most. There's the rolling toss of reggaeton rhythms, heady barrages of snares and piercing high-end sounds guaranteed to make the back of your neck prickle. Speaking to Dazed in a recent interview, Kamixlo said that his first EP, 2015's Demonico, was "supposed to sound like wrestling moves, but in sonic form." Heard in the club, you can't help but throw yourself around with abandon. King Kami drags the listener along, unfolding its mood with measured force. The EP's most aggressive moments are at the beginning, before Kamixlo leads us into more vulnerable and less structured sounds. "Golden Trigger" and "Mi Sabor" are powerful club-shakers, barely containing the force of throbbing bass. "Golden Trigger" is pervaded by a white-hot wall of noise while "Mi Sabor" is punctuated by a snarling, pitched-down vocal sample. "I don't run from my demons… because sometimes I become them" and its sweetly ominous melody acts as the eye of the storm, but it's the closer, "NXB4VA," that best shows King Kami's range. It's a more abstract take on the producer's nu-metal influences, building from an Angelo Badalamenti-esque sample to a drone piece full of staticky screams with hardly any low-end. Kamixlo has opened a new way to lose yourself in his pulsing rhythms.
