  • As the newest resident at Rex Club in Paris, the French producer S3A is connected with a tradition stretching back to the origins of dance music in France. His route into house music has been enviable, receiving production advice from Chez Damier and Motor City Drum Ensemble, and debuting at Rex alongside Laurent Garnier in 2014. S3A is a formalist, crafting functional house cuts steeped in his love of funk and disco, rarely surprising but consistently effective. This EP is an homage to Rex Club, nodding back to the days when France dominated the world's dance floors, without getting bogged down in French Touch nostalgia. S3A stands for "sampling as an art," and each of these tracks lives by the dynamism of its samples. The drums are warm and punchy, new melodies arriving exactly when you'd expect. On "4000e," giddy keys lead to a breakdown where, rather than offering a break, whooshing synths ramp up the tension. "Spaceship" and "Jun" are more easygoing, giving whirring chords and balmy guitar licks room to breathe. The only disappointment is "QuickSheitan," where the layers are muddy and a chanting vocal becomes cheesy. The record ends with 30 seconds of romantic piano keys, made for the end of a night on Rex's legendary dance floor.
