Cygnus - Ne0 Ge0

  • This electro EP is slower than most, but no less powerful.

  • Ne0 Ge0 is a welcome return for Phillip Washington, who has been quiet after thrilling electro heads with his masterful 2016 album, Cosmos. Ne0 Ge0's four tracks, primed for use by more intrepid DJs, see the Dallas producer further develop his wonderfully adventurous sound. He often dials the tempo down lower than most electro, opening up space between his tightly programmed percussion. But this effort for Burek's Barba offshoot stands out for its creative approach to phrases and tonalities. The electrifying "Zone Shifting" puts it all together perfectly with atypical seven-bar phrasing that features wordless vocals and a zig-zagging, acidic bass riff. The next two cuts show off Washington's penchant for trippy vocoder vocals. On "Vertexing," emotional, octave-jumping "verses" emerge from a labyrinthine soundscape. The vocoder is in full effect on the title cut, its breezy vocal lines tied to vibrant synth figures in sequences that mix mellow up-and-down movements with key changes. The techno-tinged "Astronoot" draws on vocal elements similar to "Zone Shifting," but sticks to a lower gear to wind things down. Among the finest electro 12-inches to land in recent months, Ne0 Ge0 adds to an impressive discography from Washington.
